To share their successful Classroom to Food Pantry Pipeline (CFPP) with Parkwood Baptist’s Hand to Hand Food Pantry, funded in part by the grant, Ragsdale put together a table display for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event held on Monday, January 16th at Four Seasons Town Center Mall.

After the ceremony, Ragsdale was presented with a plaque commemorating their achievement.

1st Block students at Ragsdale High School harvested 5 bins in a single class as part of their Classroom to Food Pantry Pipeline (CFPP) with Hand to Hand Food Pantry sponsored by Sonya Hamilton State Farm.

This is a bit of feat for a class of 22 harvesting, cleaning, and reseeding the equivalent of seven 12 Bottle Portable Garden Bins (12BPG) because 4 of the 5 bins were the larger grey 18 Bottle Portable Garden Bins (18BPG) that each equal 1 1/2 12 BPG’s.

Parts of the harvest were filmed for an upcoming video to air on local television as part of a Gift of Giving Grant sponsored by the Four Seasons Town Centre.

On Wednesday evening, November 16th, Ragsdale High School joined 14 other schools in Guilford County to receive a “Gift of Giving” grant sponsored by Four Seasons Town Centre. The grant is made in partnership with Guilford County Schools’ (GCS) Character Development Initiative to fund programs that promote student service-learning.

Part of the Ragsdale’s grant money will go toward adding five more Portable Gardens to its existing Classroom to Food Pantry Pipeline (CFPP) to benefit Parkwood Baptist Church’s Hand to Hand Food Pantry.

In mid-January 2017, a :30 second video of this project in action will be shown by GCS and local media.

Sponsored by Sonya R. Hamilton of State Farm, this marks the 2nd year of the CFPP at Ragsdale High where the program was first piloted in the winter of 2016.  This year it’s been expanded from one to two of the “SciVis” classes.  The monthly harvesting data will be used in the statistics portion of the curriculum.

Due to a short school day on Friday, the rest of the bins will be setup this week.

RHS Students grow food for food pantry over summer

RHS-Summer
Some of the Ragsdale High School students who participated in the Classroom to Food Pantry Pipeline during the school year have volunteered to continue growing food over the summer delivering what they harvest to Renaissance Road Church’s Food Bank.

The students took home one of the portable gardens from class and were offered a “sharecropping” option where they can give half the micro greens to the food bank and keep the rest.  The participating students elected to give all the food grown to the food bank every four weeks until school returned.

On Friday, May 6th, students in the 1st Block Analytics Class at Ragsdale High cut, washed, and bagged fresh micro greens for delivery and distribution at Renaissance Church’s Food Bank.

Once done with the harvest, students recorded the number of bags made. They will use this information to calculate how many Portable Gardens are needed to meet the total weekly demand of the Food Bank.

We continue to grow the Ragsdale-Renaissance Church Pipeline thanks in part to the Greater High Point Food Alliance.

On Wednesday, April 6th, Jamestown News did a story on ReBuildUp’s Food Bike program at Ragsdale High School featuring students playing a nutritional card game, growing food in class to be delivered to nearby Renaissance Church’s Food Bank, along with a contest for the best home grown bottle lettuce.  This was made possible by sponsor Michael Robinson Accounting along with the aid of the Greater High Point Food Alliance to line up the Food Bank.

Classroom to Food Bank Pipeline at Ragsdale High School

Food grown by students in Mrs. Pendrak’s (a former PitchPocalypse Winner) 2nd Block Game Design class at Ragsdale High School was successfully harvested and delivered to Renaissance Church’s Food Bank on Saturday, March 26th, as part of ReBuildUp’s “Food Bike” program.

In addition to setting up this “Classroom to Food Bank Pipeline,” students played a nutrition based card game also called “Food Bike” where they took turns being customers and merchants selling one another fruits and vegetables based on each food’s health benefits.

The Food Bike program finished up with a small cash prize contest where winners made bottle lettuce growers to see who could grow the biggest plant over the course of the program.  Coming in first was Reina, second place went to Emily, and coming in third was Cameron.

ReBuildUp is currently seeking out sponsors, donors, and grants to help make these requests a reality.

There are over 40 schools across the state wanting this for their classroom and community.  There are also teachers in both Greensboro and High Point requesting Food Bike which is important given Guilford County’s status as #1 in the nation for food insecurity.

Sponsored by Michael Robinson Accounting, the Greater High Point Food Alliance also deserves thanks for connecting Ragsdale with Renaissance Church.  For more information on “Food Bike” along with how to involve your school, congregation, or food bank, visit https://rebuildup.com/foodbike along with the Greater High Point Food Alliance at http://www.ghpfa.org
