Food Growing League 2019-2020 Spring Season Officially Starts

The February through May Spring Season of the Food Growing League begins with eight schools from across North Carolina vying for the tallest Cherry Tomato, Basil, and Jalapeño plants.

In May, classes have the option of holding a Mother’s Day Plant Sale selling off what they’ve grown over the Spring as a School fundraiser.

This competition features two conferences made up of four schools each.

Conference PS1A consists of Cone Elementary (Greensboro), Stokesdale Elementary (Stokesdale), Pleasant Garden Elementary (Pleasant Garden), and Leesville Road Middle (Raleigh).

Conference PS1B is made up of Northview Middle (Hickory), Woodington Middle (Kinston), Oak Grove High (Winston-Salem), and DH Conley High (Greeneville).

Videos showcasing the results of Rounds 1-4 for each conference will be posted at the end of the season in late May. The winners of both conferences will be face off in a separate Championship video that decides who will be the Spring Season 2019-2020 Food Growing League Champion.

The Championship video will also share who the Plant Sale Spring Season Champion is as well.

Round 2’s Pet Food Sales had a surprising result.

The first round of the Food Growing League is here with three familiar schools plus a new competitor in the Fall 2019-2020 season.

Cone Elementary (Greensboro) takes on Stokesdale Elementary (Stokesdale) and newcomer Northview Middle (Hickory) goes up against Leesville Road Middle (Raleigh) for the best Tendergreen Harvest.

As a Bonus Round, we have Pet Food Sales after the matches. This Bonus Round allows students in the League using our GrowBuck program to sell their harvests to other students. This way students have another way to win plus get to practice their math and financial literacy skills.

2019-2020 FGL Fall Season Begins!

It’s time for the Fall Season (October-January) of the Food Growing League once again. Cone Elementary, Leesville Road Middle, and Stokesdale Elementary return for the Fall Season with Northview Middle out of Hickory joining us for their first season.

Like before, Tendergreens, Gardencress, Radish, and Kale will be grown each month with the new option to put harvests into small plastic bags to give to others as pet food instead of the single large container used in previous Fall Seasons.

Stokesdale Elementary says “Thank You” for Basil

We were very grateful to receive all the letters and decorated cards from the Stokesdale Elementary students that took part in the Spring Season of the Food Growing League.

Every letter was read and we wish the graduating 5th graders the best of luck as they move on to Middle School and we hope to see the graduating 4th graders again next year.

Invest Collegiate Middle wins the 2018-19 Spring Season Food Growing League Championship

Charlotte’s Invest Collegiate Middle took the top spot with a 4-0 record to win both their Conference B Title and the overall Food Growing League Spring Season Championship with the tallest basil plants.

Hendersonville’s Sugarloaf Elementary won the Conference A Title and Pleasant Garden Elementary received first place for both the number of plants sold at 45 and most money raised with $200 going towards their school’s technology fund.

We’ll see everyone again for the Fall Season October through January when schools will be vying for the best microgreen harvest by weight.

It’s finally here, the 2018-19 Food Growing League Spring Season Championship. Started in February, students have been growing their basil plants for 3 months now.
